cat losing voice and depressedMy Cat (5yo male neutered domestic short hair) has for the past 4.75 years always lived in a flat and has never been outside. I have recently moved to a ground floor house with internal courtyard so he can go outside. About 1 month ago I got a female kitten of 8 weeks in age. He has grown used to her and tolerates her. My sister has just arrived from Britain and has a one year old boy and I think that the adult cat has become jealous. Last Sunday night he ventured to see me and went to miaow but has lost his voice. He also vommited clear mucas, but it has now stopped. He still has no voice and is slowly losing his appetite, but I notice him still eating a little, drinking a little and I have noticed some small stools in his cat tray. He seems to not want my company and is afraid of me all of a sudden. I am worried as he is usually a very vocal cat and now he seems to have a sore throat. He also seems very down in the dumps and sad and I cannot figure out what is bothering him. He has not vomitted since Monday night, but sometimes it seems as if he wants to cough something up. The first time he brought up mucas it had some hair in it but the second time round no. He does not seem to be in pain as I can rub his throat and he doesn't seem to mind. Do you have any advice as to what may be wrong. I am taking him to the vet today but I would like as much information as possible. He is short haired cat but he has a lot of hair and now he is starting to malt so I will start brushing now. Any information would be very much appreciated as I am very worried about him, he seems rather depressed.
cat losing voiceTumbleweed (7yo mixed breed male neutered) use to meow all the time, he sounded like a foghorn. The about 8 weeks ago, he started sounding hoarse, and has now stopped mewoing all together. But he now has a really bad wheese, and sometimes a snorting sound when he breathes. I'm not sure if the 2 are connected in any way. If not, he sounds like he has a bad chest cold. I'm really worried about him. Thanks for any ideas, I thought asthma, heck i've thought everything. I'm so worried, and i'm at nt b/fs house, not home, or i'd taken him to my vet there, but nervous about taking him to a Canadian vet. Know that sounds silly. Thanks again for your time.
cat not eating and throwing upMy cat (12yo female neutered Siamese) recently threw up several times (about 1 month ago) and then didn't seem to want to eat or drink. I took her to the vet concerned that she might be dehydrated (don't know hoe to test this). Dr gave her a 300cc bolus of LR and Methylprenisolone. Cat had no temp but was somewhat listless. Dr drew blood and said that her lipids were low as well as her WBC's and seemed anemic. Dr didn't feel any lumps or nodes but seems to feel that she may have cat lymphoma. No definitive procedures were done (ie) bone marrow aspiration. I was given prednisone 10mg qd and cyproheptadine to stimulate her appetite and boost her immune system. Oral meds were to difficult (towel wrapped) and cat resisted...I feel this enhanced her refusal of food and water. Recently Vit B shots have helped her appetite and she seems more her normal self. However I am still having difficulty with her drinking water. I stopped the LR for 4 days hoping that perhaps this would make her want water (over hydration? from LR?). I also read that diazepam is a good appetite stimulator. In your experience have you found this to be true and if so how much does the cat require? She is about 8 pounds.I have some diazepam and would gladly give her some if I knew the proper dose.
cat with fluid in lungsThis kitten (6mo domestic short hair female) has ever since her accident and as long as we've had her, had fluid on her lungs. She breaths struggled (too fast) and has cough attacks, both presumably from the fluid. The vet has taken x-rays and given her anti-biotics for a couple of weeks and a fluid we have given her through the mouth to drain the fluid away. She has been in and out of the vets, with prognosis differing every time. Last week they seemed optimistic and said to stop anti-b. and half dosage on the fluid thing. I thought she seemed worse a couple of days after this, and now at the check up the vet thinks so too. The vet has given up now, and thinks there is nothing to do, even though they don't know what is wrong with her yet. Other than this problem the kitten seems fine. She is happy and awake, she eats, drinks, goes toilet, plays and so on. Her gums are nice and pink. I would like to know if you have any suggestions to what they problem might be or if you think it can be fixed, and if we should take the kitten to a different vet. I am worried this vet is not doing enough, or at least not the right things. I don't want to have to put the kitten down, I love her allready. I can´t give up on her on the basis of fluid in her lungs, surely there must be something causing this, and if we knew what we could maybe fix it..Is this a common injury for cats, and do some of them make it through? The x-ray apparantly is milky or cloudy, the vet says she can't see much in them.
cat fibrosarcoma treatmentBarney (male neutered American shorthair 14years old), our male cat had a quarter size mass on right flank which was diagnosed as vaccine associated fibrosarcoma. Surgery was done in December 2004 to remove the tumor. Pathology for determination of clear margins was done after surgery and a few neoplastic strands were still present. He's done very well since and is alert and active. He's developed several small nodules in the same area and a new mass up on his back spine area. We just took Barney back to the vet suregeon who did the original surgery and he is recommending a second surgery to remove the new nodules and mass. He did blood work and urinealysis but di not do a needle biopsy. Our question is at age 14 and with a tumor that is almost sure to reform following surgery - does it make sense at his age and with this type of tumor to put him through the surgery again. If we don't elect the surgery - can you give some guidnae on how the cancer would progress and the quality of life Barney would then be subject to. My understanding is that this type of tumor does not normally metastisize and would simply continue to grow and invade his connective tissue.
Cat spraying out of anusHe (7yo male domestic short haired neutered) is trying to 'spray' something out of his anus. It is a brownish color and smells really bad. He is also having problems urinating. There was some liquid blood in the bathtub plus the brownish discharge. He is walking around crying and searching for a place to 'spray'. What kind of medicine should I order for him? What is the diagnosis? Should I take him to a vet? We have 3 other cats in the house and a 4 month old baby boy. |

Dog with fleas
Last night my 7yo female neutered maltese was scatching a little & I noticed that the day before she did a little too. I rolled her over to look through her and found a flea...then 2 more a little bit later. I immediately ran to the store and bought Sergeants flea control that you put on their back between the shoulder blades & put that on her immediatedly. I washed all of her bedding & have vaccumed the house at least 3 times since. We have a huge 2 level house and the dog is 99.9% of the time on our main level in our living room & dining room. I found only 2 today...and that was early this morning...I have not seen any since...but am scared to death of how many fleas are in our house that I cannot see. I am afraid they are crawling everywhere & don't know where to start. The dog sometimes goes upstairs in our bedrooms.....I am afraid these pests could be in closets & etc....any advice would be greatly appreciated! - Click
