Cat defecating outside litter boxMy cat and I moved into a new home. He now has three canine friends who he has spent time with before. One of the dogs was eating the felines stool, so I purchased the Purrforma self cleaning litter box. He would only urinate in it and chose to defecate on my side of the bed after 6 days. He attempted to defecate another time, I got him and placed him in the litter box, however that only worked once, and choose the bed again. Since then I purchased a new non automated litter box and returned him to his feline pine cat litter - that was two days ago and he has not eliminated anything since. I have been leaving the bedroom door closed so he is not tempted. I'm just waiting for him to use it. any thoughts? He is also doing an excessive amount of licking to the point where he has two balding patches. He just had an allergy shot 4 weeks ago. Should I inquire about behavioral modification type drugs?
Cat chewing paws1. My cat has an area on each of her front paws that she has been chewing all of the fur off of for several months now. Recently she has also started on one of her back paws and has even created a sore. What could be the cause and is there anything I can do without taking her to the vet? She is a VERY SKIDDISH cat and sometimes I really think she will have a "heart attack" if we take her. 2. This same cat likes to sit on the kitchen counter and lick the photographs on the fridge. She loves this! Is this coating harmful to her? 3. Is it harmful if she has about a tablespoon of vanilla ice cream about once a week?
Cat feline herpesvirus treatmentmy cat has been diagnosed with herpes virus which causes outbreaks of upper resp problems form time to time. He is treated with antibiotics which usually works. Before diagnosis he was treated with prednisone injection. Does this strenghten the virus? If so, for how long? What other treatments are recommended for virus?
Declawing cat is now limpingDear Dr. Lillian - I had my male himalayan cat neutered and declawed nearly four weeks ago. After the surgery, he limped for one week and then seemed to stop for the most part. Now, two weeks later, he's limping again, and fairly severely. I've taken him to my vet several times and they can find nothing wrong with him. I have a three month old himalayan, and she and my declawed male play constantly, running and wrestling. My vet thought my cat may have irritated or bruised the area around some of the incisions during this play - again, he found nothing blatant or obvious wrong with his feet. I read on several vet sites that some cats limp for months, or may suffer from "phantom" pain. I'm sick about this and need some advise or reassurance. I will take him back to the vet this week if no improvement, but wanted another perspective. Is this unusual? Will he stop limping eventually? Could there be something else wrong? By the way, I will NOT be de-clawing my new kitty - never again will I put one of my "children" through such cruelty. I learned a hard lesson this go-around. Thank you much for your time and expertise. I look forward to your response.
Cat who hates going to the vetElsa was a stray cat that we rescued about a year ago when she started sleeping on our back porch. We took her to the vet imediately for bloodwork which revealed that she was healthy. She was pregnant though so couldn't recieve any shots. She successfuly gave birth and the kittens have gone to good homes except one which we kept. Elsa has started this constant night time crying. At first we thought she was looking for the kittens but it hasn't subsided. We also can't get her to the vet. She won't go near the car carrier the way she did the first time we trapped her. Also, she won't take a sedative no matter how we try - mashed in tunafish, pressed into roast beef, force fed. And last week we tried to catch her in a blanket and lower her into the cage but it was a disaster. Not only did she scratch me and get away, but it was as if we had broken all trust with her. That night she ran away after not being out for 6 months. She was gone a whole week but came back this morning. She came right in and seems happy but her eye is scratched. She'll let me pet her again and even rolls over for a tummy scratch which is a good sign that she still trusts me. But we can't keep a cat that we can't take to the vet. I want to have her spayed and keep her indoors but I don't know how to get her into the vet. We have another appointment next week but the vet offered no better suggestions other than trying the sedative in her food after not feeding her for a day. I'm hoping you can help. What can we do about getting her to the vet? I'd rather not try to wrap her in a towel again because it's so traumatic. Also how can we stop the night time crying? We've tried rewarding quiet behavior and we even tried comfort zone plug-ins but all to no avail. Please help.
Cat with ringwormMy veterinarian diagnosed my kitten with ringworm. She has a lesion on the posterior aspect of her forelimb that is ~2cm in diameter, and two lesions on her face that are 2mm in diameter. At present I am treating her with 62.5mg griseofulvin per day (currently on day 3 of a 40 day course), which she is tolerating well so far. My vet also gave me a shampoo that contains 2% chlorhexidine with instructions to shampoo her once per week. My question is, would it be more effective to use the shampoo 3 times per week or even daily? Also, how long might it take to get rid of the ringworm? |

Cat wheezing and coughing
We have been feeding a feral stray cat (probably over 10 years old, he's a Domestic Short Haired neutered male) for 6 years now. We trapped him early on and had him vacinated and neutered. For years now he's been coughing and wheezing. At times he gets worse and has nasal and eye discharge but that eventually clears up. We trapped him again and took him to the vet. Several of his teeth fell out while being examined and he has severe dental disease. The vet said his coughing and wheezing were probably due to his dental disease and his lungs "didn't sound that bad". Have you heard of dental disease causing respiratory problems or should we go for another opinion?
