Signs of a cat on heatWe own 3 cats and this is the 4th we saved from the streets - we had her vet checked and she got a clean bill of health but the vet said she's likely NOT to be neutered. With our 3 who are neutered, we've never seen them on heat. My question is how we know if Puddles (the new cat) is on heat - presently she's been crying loudly and acting very strange - I just wanted to know if this is 'normal' or if she's ill. Other than the crying and wanting to go out, she's been active and playing and eating (seems to be off her food slightly).
Cat scratching ears constantlyWe live in Denver, CO, in a very dry environment. All of our animals scratch themselves a lot, but my cat Lucy (5yo female Siamese mix neutered) has scratched behind her ears so much that she has broken the skin. A scab developed, and the wound was healing, but last night she went crazy and would not stop scratching. She broke the skin again. I wonder if you can recommend a solution to the problem? Is there something I can apply topically to help comfort her itching? Do I need to take her to the vet to get a cone put on her head? I was thinking of applying Neosporin, but I was hesitant to use a people medication on my cute little cat. Could you offer advice on what the best plan of attack would be to get her to stop scratching and let her ear heal?
Cat coughing up hairball now off food and straining to urinateMy cat (4yo mixed breed male neutered cat) couphed up a hair ball a couple of days ago and now he won't eat like he used to. Hes' very lethargic and his meow is getting quiter. He will sit in his litter box for awhile like he is trying to go but nothing is coming out. Today he sat in front of his water bowl and didn't drink anything. I'm starting to get real concerned for him.
Kitten not eating cat foodWe had the kitten shortly after birth. He is now 5 weeks old. We received feeding and care advice from a vet, and the kitten is doing very well. Eyes have changed from blue to greenish cat-like structure. He runs, plays, and is mostly litterbox trained. The question I have is related to making the switch to solid food. His teeth are in and are sharp, and he ravages the bottle's nipple. However all attempts to feed him oceanfish kitten food (wet) are futile. He has no desire whatsoever. I tried mixing it with KMR, tried it alone, and again, to no avail. After a week of this with no luck, we accidentaly found out after a barbeque, that he loves hamburger. As a subsequent experiment, we found out that he also loves turkey. I mixed a very tiny bit into some wet kitten food, and he loves it, but usually eats the meat and only the surrounding kitten food, and then leaves it alone. I don't want the kitten hooked on human food, as I am sure it isn't healthy. Any suggestions as far as accomplishing this weaning process using recommended pet food?
Cat licking fur till baldI have had my cat (she's 8years old now - American shorthair) since she was a kitten and has been is very good health since then. She has always been very good at keeping herself clean but in the past month or two I have noticed she has been licking her stomach and hind legs more than just cleaning. The fur in those areas is getting very thin and she keeps loosing more everyday. She doesn't have any sores of any kind. What can I do to stop her from licking these areas and how to get her fur to grow back?
Cat with urinary problemsI have a cat that is just over a year old. She was supposed to be spayed by a RVT where I work. For about 2 months now, she's been howling and screeching at all hours of the day and night. I took her to the vet, and they did a urinalysis, they said they couldn't see anything. I don't have the money to pay for a lab test, so I put her on Clavamox for a full cycle, and baby aspirin. After the cycle she quieted down for a little while. Then about a week later it started again. So I tried the Clavamox and baby aspirin again. Same thing, she quieted down for a few days. And, once again, it came back. She urinates in a few, specific places around the house, outside the litter box. She yowls and howls, and rubs up against everything and one. She sits with her bottom in the air with her tail raised. She constantly is licking her tail area. I feed her Iams adult food, and use Arm and Hammer scoopable litter. So, I'm confused as to whether she has a repeat UTI or if the spaying was botched. What should I do? I don't have a bunch of money for a bunch of tests if she just needs a re-spaying. I know it's hard to know without examining her, but I would appreciate your best guess as to the problem. Thanks! |

Female cat with bloody discharge from vagina
Our (1yo female DSH) neutered cat (neutered prior to our ownership) has had intermittent small volume bloody discharge from her vagina for the last 3 months. On exam her vulva had an ulcerated area and our veternarian is planning an exam under anesthesia later this week. She has no weight loss, a healthy appetite, and has had no change in activity. She is the only animal in our home. What do you believe this could be?
