Scabs on cat not healing

We have three cats. One is 19, one is 5, and one is 1 years old. They are all neutered. The 5 year old, Leo and the one year old play and wrestle. Leo has scabs under his neck and around his head. I think they began as play bites but now he keeps scratching at them. I clean them every so often and place neosporin on them so they won't get infected. Everytime they heal he scratches them back open again. I have clipped his back nails rather short and he still manages to make more sores. I am getting worried about him because they are not healing and I imagine he is in pain. He is eating and drinking and socializing with us and the others. The other two cats do not have the scabs so its isolated to Leo. I think he just can't stop scratching. I know they give e-collars to dogs...do they cats as well? Would that help or there something else going on?

Geriatric cat with allergies and arthritis contemplating euthanasia

My cat, Miss Kittie, is about 15 years old (female neutered Calico cat). We've had her since she was born. She's mainly an inside cat. About 6 years ago she started having problems with itchy ears. At about the same time she also started limping on her back right leg. Long story short, she has an allergy to something, don't know what exactly. She also has arthritis in both back legs (worse in the right leg) and on her back next to her tail. Her vet gave her prednisone for the allergy and nothing for the arthritis. We've been working to get releif for Miss Kittie. The Prednisone worked, but her vet won't let her stay on it, they have taken it away from her. She is now so miserable, she doesn't sleep that much and is always trying to scratch at her ears or licking the air. She is also limping worse every day. I am not sure what I should do at this point. The problem is that we are getting ready to have some major construction done on our house, the room where Miss Kittie has her box is going to be torn down. I am trying to get her to use a kitty door to go out to the garage to use her box, but she has a hard time getting through the door because of her stiffness. Everytime she moves she makes a little noise like she's hurting and she Meows at me every time I walk by her, even if she's sleeping, she wakes up and mow's at me. I am wondering if it is time to think about putting her to sleep?? It kills me to even think about it, but she's miserable. Each time I talk to her vet about this, they just want to put her on some more drugs. She is taking an anti-histamine, a pill for Hyperthyroid, and was taking Prednisone. She is not a good traveler and hates going in the car to go to the vet. Her vet wants me to take her to an allergy specialist and I don't think she'll handle that too well. What do I do???? At this point I am putting pills in her food and them forcing 2 pills a day down her throat. Is it time to let her go?? Please help me make a decision. I feel terrible just thinking about it, but everybody says I'm letting her live for me, not for her!!! I hope I didn't ramble too much and you can make sense of this! Thank you!

Cat losing hair

Missy (13mo American Shorthair, neutered female) has always been a playful cat, with a personality all her own. For the past 5-7 days, I've noticed she's losing a lot of hair. I've gone from brushing her 2-3 times a week to twice a day. The amount of hair is probably double than what I usually comb out. Along with the shedding/loss of hair, she has also developed white flakes, like some sort of dry skin problem or dandruff. Her appitite is still the same, although she sleeps more and isn't as playful. Just the other day, I also noticed a sore on the top of her head, just behind the ear. The area is reddened and the hair around the sore is completely gone. I think she's getting another one across from this sore. I'm also finding an abnormal amount of loose hair all over my house. If she passes by a fan or a breeze comes through, the hair just falls off of her. She never goes outside with the exception of the screened-in area at the front door and occasionally in the garage. Any assistance you can offer Missy and myself would greatly be appreciated.

Cats with itchy scabby skin

I have six cats ranging from 2-5 years old all neutered. Right now, three of them are having exactly the same skin problems as one another. They have itchy, scabby skin above their eyes and sometimes as far up as their ears. They also have itchy nipples, and are licking them raw. The first cat developed this about 2 to 3 years ago. It came and went, and never got too bad. The second cat developed this about 6 to 8 months ago. The third cat develped it about 3 weeks ago. His was worse than the other cats, although occurring in all the same places. I took him to the vet a week ago. He had never seen this. He did skin scrapings and asked about products around our house. He also cultured for ringworm. We dosed him with Revolution, and he seemed to be less itchy and his sores started drying up. He was also put on antibiotics. Unfortunately, his itchiness is back and his skin looks like it did a week ago. They are all indoor cats. We have dogs that go in and out. We have birds and a rabbit. The cats and dogs are usually on Advantage drops. None have any fleas at this point. The doc didn't see any sort of mite under the microscope. We use only one king of cleaning product...Advanage....it's supposed to be non-toxic, safe to use around animals, made of natural stuff, etc. Does this sound like an allergy, parasite, toxic reaction, dietary deficiency??? (we have hard water, is that significant?)??? Any ideas??? Right now the cats are on a vegetarian diet...but only for the last 3 months. Prior to that the cats were eating a variety of mid-grade commercial cat foods.

Giving cat human medication

My cat's kidneys (she's 19yo neutered domestic short haired cat) are failing. My vet has her taking 2 Tumil K potassium gluconate pills 3 times per day. The Tumil K pills & paste are fairly expensive at the rate she takes them (~$30 every 10 days). If I match the mg given, can I substitute potassium gluconate pills meant for humans for the Tumil K pills?

Cat not drinking as much water

My vet just examined my cat (7yo Ragdoll cat) and said he needs 2 teeth pulled, but that has not been scheduled yet. Meanwhile, I changed his food from dry to moist in case it was hurting him to chew the dry food. Since then, his appetite has increased, but he is not drinking much water compared to how much he drank before. He is still urinating regularly, as I find the clumps when I clean his litter box daily. I called my vet's office and they said not to worry... but he drank lots of water before! Should I be concerned? Is there anything else I can or should do? Thank you for your time.

Vet question of the day

Add to Dog digging carpet
My dog (5yo female neutered Blue Heeler mix) is outside during the day and inside at night. I've only had her for 6 months- I got her from a friend. During the past month, she started scratching at our carpets ruining them. She only scratches them around the walls never in middle of the floor. Why is she doing this and what can I do to get her to stop? - Click here to read the answer
