Cat urinating outside litter box
Randomly, over the past 5 yrs Snickers (9yo female neutered tabby) has been voiding (urine)out of her box. Usually on my bed, in the same spot. Tried all the enzyme cleaners, but to no avail---still happening.Been to the vet--urinalysis has come always come back OK. They said it was behaviorial& wanted to try meds(elavil, or the like).I didnt want to try meds as first line b/c it was always so random---would happen for a few days in spurts ,then be fine for awhile. 6mos. ago I had my daughter & Snicks' was less that pleased--didnt really come out of my bedroom except to eat & use litterbox. She finally returned to her normal-pre-baby-self personality wise , but then she started again w/ the peeing on the bed. Took her to vet---once again urine OK. I put up a gate to prevent Snicks from going in the bedroom& all was well---for about a month. Then she started peeing on my couch, but not always.Would go in box , then later in the day--pee on the couch .We had the couch commercially cleaned & enzymed. Didnt matter. Then one day she peed where my daughter was sitting & I had had it...back to vet---"run tests & I want meds NOW!!!" Took blood to run panel to see what meds to use (she is also overweight)& vet was conferring w/ behaviorist. She decides to take an x-ray of the bladder & BOOM---there are bladder stones--very,very small, but theyre there--I saw them myself. Now they want to do surgery & remove & analyze stones.I know a diet chabge will probably be in order & that will be determined by what "kind" of stone it is What do you think of the reccomendation about the surgery??Do you suggest I take her for a second opinion (in person) , or does this sound like symptoms of stones & is surgey always the only option(w/o trying meds 1st)??? Also, I should tell you that she hasnt peed outside the box in about 1 1/2 week, but she has been pooping on the rug that is outside her box ( again...randomly) We scoop her box 2xs a day & have tried adding another box.I've never heard her cry or moan when she goes in box & all her other tests (ie. thyroid are normal)What do you think?? |

Dog with problems walking
When I came home from work yesterday, Sparrow(6yo female neutered mix breed), who stays in my basement with access to the crawl space under the house, was having trouble going up the stairs. She seemed sick - hot nose & depressed. She has a knot midway up her tail about the size of a quarter. Her hindquarters are slightly swollen and tender. Her behind was dirty with dust, some fecal matter, and little black dots that looked like flea eggs (she doesn't have fleas - she's on med from the vet.) It seemed she had been dragging her bottom on the ground. My gut feeling is that she may have been bitten by a spider or god forbid a snake (in my basement?!!) but I'm also worried that she's hurt her back. She can still walk - even jump on the bed - but she is not moving correctly. She is still eating and drinking. She's not any worse this morning, but no better. She's not limping, but she acts stiff - is not moving her hind legs with ease, but I don't see where they look out of whack. For example, when she goes up steps, she just goes one step at a time, very slowly and carefully when she usually bounds & skips steps. It doesn't look like she's knuckling over, and her feet and legs look normal. Another thought after babying her this morning - she has had trouble in the past with her anal glands being blocked. Usually I try to massage & expel them when I bathe her. I haven't noticed her dragging her butt, which usually happens when her glands are filled and need expelling, but is it possible this could be the problem? Or constipation?
