Cat with tumor on ear

two years ago, my 12yo neutered female white cat had surgery for removal of what was a cancerous condition on the tips of her ears.  They would get crusty and then bleed.  Both ears were clipped and she recovered nicely.  She now has developed a tumor in her right ear which attempts to heal then she scratches it and it bleeds.  I have taken her to the vet.  She received an antibiotic injection and I am giving her oral antibiotics for at least 10 days.  I am keeping the ear clean with peroxide - this lasts for 3-4 days without bleeding.  My vet just re-checked her.  Initially she told me and once more reminded me that she thinks she can remove the tumor but of course she cannot guarantee that it won't return.  She did extremely well after the first surgery - two years later, I am faced with making the decision for surgery or letting the disease take its course.  The surgery will take a good portion of her ear, which will no doubt leave her inside ear exposed somewhat.  I realize that there are no guarantees and that my cat is quite old.  I do not want to prolong her life if she is or will suffer.  So far, she is congeniel and happy, she eats well though she is and has been slight of build.  My question is, given your experience with animals with this type of condition, should I proceed with the surgery which I selfishly scheduled for Tuesday or should I let her be and ultimately make the desicion when we, my vet and I think she can no longer continue?  My concern is that if the tumor is causing discomfort and although I see no signs of pain, is my cat suffering?  I keep her clean and she continues to be the dignified cat she has always been.  Will surgery improve the quality of life she has left or should I cancel the appointment and continue as I am, keeping her clean and comfortable - will the bleeding get more profuse?

Vet question of the day

Add to Cat recovering from hepatic lipidosis-fatty liver disease
My Silver Tabby (8yo female neutered) is now recovering nicely, from Hepatic Lipidosis, and is eating and drinking on her own.She now weighs 8 pounds, and is active and playful.I can feel her ribs, but they have a covering of fat, so I'm wondering, is this a good weight for her? She eats about a quarter of a cup of Feline Iams Adult Maintenance a day, and that has recently increased a bit.Is that enough? Most of the time when I'm at work, she sleeps, and is active in the evening. Thanks! - Click here to read the answer
