Overweight cat
5 months ago I purchased a 1 yr old pure-bred Abyssinian female to live with my 3 yr old pure-bred Burmese male. They get along very well together(both neutered and front declawed). Since she has started living with me and the Burmese, she has gained (what I believe) is a lot of weight. I have fed my Burmese "Royal Canin Slim" dry food for 2 years and he has been slim, active and healthy. She was very slim when she came home at age 1. She eats the same food. I have always allowed my Burmese to eat from a bowl when he chooses and he remains slim. She has grown very "thick." I saw the parents of this Aby and they were slim. She has a belly that droops like she has had multiple litters of kittens and she is barely 1 1/2 yrs old. She appears happy and healthy but not overly active (I'm used to my Burmese being extremely active and playful). I'm concerned because I expected her to be very energetic and slim. When I had her declawed shortly after bringing her home, the Vet remarked how "nice it was to see that they were both slim and active." My parents have a Siamese that was slim for many years but became much bigger in his advancing years and is very lethargic. I do not want this to happen to her- especially so young. Do I need to limit her food? And, if so, what is the best way to do this with a Burmese that eats very "sensibly" on his own? I don't want to put him on a dining routine since he is perfect doing what he's been doing for years. What is a healthy amount of food for her so she slims down? Thank you. |

Dog with problems walking
When I came home from work yesterday, Sparrow(6yo female neutered mix breed), who stays in my basement with access to the crawl space under the house, was having trouble going up the stairs. She seemed sick - hot nose & depressed. She has a knot midway up her tail about the size of a quarter. Her hindquarters are slightly swollen and tender. Her behind was dirty with dust, some fecal matter, and little black dots that looked like flea eggs (she doesn't have fleas - she's on med from the vet.) It seemed she had been dragging her bottom on the ground. My gut feeling is that she may have been bitten by a spider or god forbid a snake (in my basement?!!) but I'm also worried that she's hurt her back. She can still walk - even jump on the bed - but she is not moving correctly. She is still eating and drinking. She's not any worse this morning, but no better. She's not limping, but she acts stiff - is not moving her hind legs with ease, but I don't see where they look out of whack. For example, when she goes up steps, she just goes one step at a time, very slowly and carefully when she usually bounds & skips steps. It doesn't look like she's knuckling over, and her feet and legs look normal. Another thought after babying her this morning - she has had trouble in the past with her anal glands being blocked. Usually I try to massage & expel them when I bathe her. I haven't noticed her dragging her butt, which usually happens when her glands are filled and need expelling, but is it possible this could be the problem? Or constipation?
