Dog houses - a place to stay in
Well, the word pretty much sums it all up. All dogs prefer a place (or some would say a den) to live in. So when picking out a dog house what should you consider? Your choices range from plastic versions to the chateau deluxe dog houses. I have no problems with either but before you go and purchase one, you need to consider a few things :
- where are you planning to put the dog house? Indoors or outdoors under cover or just out with all the elements? Your decision as to where to put it would inevitably limit your choice of dog house - you wouldn't want a massive taj mahal version if you only have a small spot in your backyard to put it.
- ease of cleaning - some dog houses are made for ease of cleaning. The plastic versions can be hosed out, not so your wooden versions. Some dog houses have a roof that you can lift off so you have more than once point of access into the dog house.
- wind chill is a big thing when it comes to protection against the elements. Plastic dog houses often fail here - they aren't as well insulated and tend to have a lot more 'holes' which permit wind access.
- insulation - some dog houses are insulated and it helps greatly to both reduce heat build up and also shields your pet better against the cold.
- western red cedar dog houses - these have been touted as naturally repellant to creepy crawlies like termites, fleas and ticks but seriously they are only deterrents - I wouldn't say that they will completely eradicate fleas and ticks on your dog.
- try to position the dog house so that it's door isn't facing the full blast of the cold winter wind or subject to lashing rain.
- buy a dog house that suits your dog - a small dog house just isn't sufficient for a medium size dog. If you are planning to house more than one dog in it (it's nice to snuggle up on a cold winter's day!), then you need to upsize accordingly. - if you have a dog house that doesn't have a floor on it, place it on some pavers or concrete or something other than dirt to make it easier to hose down and clean. Dirt floors are difficult to 'sterilize'.
- if you are going to put blankets or rugs into the dog house then you need to wash them regularly.
- if you can, buy a dog house with a raised floor - it's better ventilation and also ensures that you dog's house won't get flooded in a downpour.
- I would site the dog house in a sheltered area away from the harsh sun and wind to prolong it's life.

Dog with wet patches in bed after sleeping
Our dog (6yo female neutered Lab mix) Daisy will sleep in our bed sometimes for a little while and then she will sleep in her crate or around the house. For the last two nights we have had thunder so she slept with us the whole night. We noticed this morning that she was cleaning herself in her back section a lot and then noticed that she had been laying in a big wet spot. This wet spot was cold and moist and soaked through a comforter, another blanket, top sheet, onto the regular sheet. On the bottom sheet it was in the shape of three circles. It didn't smell and she layed there without a problem. Do you think it was urine? If so why would she be laying in it? We also have a 5 week old baby and want to know if this could stem from that? We have noticed several other times way before the baby moist smaller moist spots on our bed, chair, or carpet where she had cleaned herself. Is this normal and how can we help our dog? We want to make sure she is not sick. We appreciate your response because we can not talk to our vet until tomorrow. Thank you!! - Click
