Dog with worm in woundI noticed my 3yo female neutered Yorkie was bleeding on her back leg.I cleaned off the blood and noticed that she had a puncture wound on her leg so I sprayed some bactine on it and shaved atound the wound to let it heal,I couple of days later I noticed that the wound was developing a large bump and wasn't healing so I squeezed around it to see if it was infected and to my horror a small wormlike insect come out of the wound.I can not fiqure out what this is or how it got inside this wound. Its about 1/4 inch long and white and looks like some type of larvae,Can you tell me what this is and what should I do about this,I have this rhing in a plastic bag to take to my vet on Monday,my dog doesn't seem to show any ill effects from this shes eating and drinking and going doing her business as usual.
Dog twitching whilst sleepingCasey (12yo male neutered Maltese) has always slept snuggled up to me RARELY moving even when I get up in the middle of the night. For 8 days now, Casey has been twitching and kicking all night long(as if in the middle of a dream...even if he just settled down). He shows no other abnormal behavior except a little more nervous than normal. Blood test done 8/20 revealed 302 U/L ALKP and 32.2 mg/dl BUN together with 5.2 EOS (whatever those mean). All other tests were in normal ranges. My vet wants to check thyroid but didn't take enough blood (and Casey had to be sedated to get the first blood sample because he squirmed too much). Currently (since Friday 8/20) Casey is being treated for gum infection and was given "Clomicalm" for the twitching (which hasn't helped yet). Your opinion for the twitching?
Distemper virus and new dogRecently, we adopted a 4 mo. old black lab from the local pound. Within 2 days after bringing the dog home, I noticed the classic signs of distemper virus. Unfortunately, after a decrease in the dog's health, our dog was put to sleep when the distemper virus was diagnosed at our vet. (2 weeks after bringing the dog home from the pound). My question deals with the time frame when we could get another dog: How long does distemper last in the environment? (I've read conflicting reports, but most sources say 3-4 wks)? For the purposes of answering this question, know that we would be planning on getting an older dog [8mo. or older] from a rescue group that has already been vaccinated - as opposed to a pound animal that may not be vaccinated. Finally, I know that a Clorox/water concoction will kill the virus, but is it realistic to think that we would kill all the virus in our home/car/yard before we would bring another dog home? (i.e. is it worth the trouble to disinfect?)
Dog with odd lumps on either side of penisI just noticed while grooming my 2yo male cocker spaniel that just above where his testes are is swollen and hard, it is not as far up as the penis, but just between on both sides. Should I bring him in to the vet, money is tight so if there is a simpler explanation I would love not having to pay the vet here to tell me.
Dog with hind limb paralysisI'm up against a wall w/no one to help. I'm in Ghana, W. Africa and I have a 2 yo female Great Dane. She has gradually lost her ability to walk and stand so now she is reduced to me holding her to pee & poop or doing it on herself. She is very alert and has all her energy and eat & drinks just fine. She has very dark poop which the vets here first said was blood and now after medication say it is bile from the liver. She's on this stuff called Liv.52 (liver stimulant) for that. I'm told by some vets that she may have been poisoned (rat poison probably) and so they gave her shots of a detox agent and vitamin K. On her medication card they have listed: DADA, Oxylet, Dexa, MVT, Vitamin K. I don't really know what each means. I don't believe that it is poisoning. The vets that agree with me say that I should just give her vitamin B complex or this stuff called Neurobion Tablets (vitamins B1+B6+B12) and pain killers. They've done blood and fecal test for parasites and have come up with nothing (not that they may not have done things incorrectly). She is about 1.5 years and has not gone into heat yet - although I'm worried that she may be going into heat since last night she had some blood-like secretion from her female area.
Dog coughing at nightMy 15yo male neutered Maltese has started coughing with nothing coming up but white foam. It starts in the middle to late night after sleeping several hours. Has a spell and that seems to be it. I also have another dog that is bothered by allergies and they are now acting up. Wondering if it could an allergy, heart problem? |

Dog with hypothyroidism and back problems
Our 9 year old beagle had been in good health, but had been getting fat and lazy in her older years. We took her to the vet for routine checkup and mentioned that she slept most of the day so the vet did some blood work and determined that her thyroid level was way low (0.1%). The vet started her on a medication of thyroxine, 0.4mg a day.
At first the dog was much more alert and seemed to have much more energy than she had before. She also lost a fair amount of weight very fast, from 37.5 pounds down to 31.5 pounds. Then, on Saturday of Labor Day weekend, she got really sick....
all of the sudden she could hardly stand. She couldn't hold her bladder, her stomach seemed bloated and she was panting hard. We took her to an emergency hospital and they basically said she had a stomach ache, that she was OK and sent us home.
She appeared to get better, and the next day we were out of town (the dog was with us) and she got a lot worse. We found a new emergency vet and he took xrays and said that she had back problems, basically a compressed disk. He gave us something for her pain, Rimadyl - 25mg.
We started off giving her one pill a day, and it seemed to help. But a few days later she was bad again. Our regular vet recommended increasing the dosage to twice a day, for both the Thyroxine and Rimadyl.
She has been on the twice a day rate for a little over a week now, and she has her good days and bad days. My concern is that overall she seems to be getting worse, and I don't understand how the symptoms match the diagnosis.
Even when she is feeling bad I can pet/scratch her back, including the area of this compressed disk and she doesn't indicate any signs of tenderness. Her stomach, however, gets very tender.
I have noticed that she will usually get worse right after she eats, like within 1/2 an hour of eating. Before she eats, she is bouncing around a little begging for food, 1/2 hour later she is walking like a drunken sailor.
She has been sensitive to being picked up for a number of years, which we have attributed to arthritus. She has always been the most sensitive to being picked up from under her rib cage. Conversely, she loves a good vigourous back scratch.
So, my questions is: should I accept what the vets have told me, or should I continue to investigate?
