Dog waking up at night and being restless

The last 2 nights my7yo female Chihuahua has been restless, similar to being in heat.  She was spayed 2 years ago.  I'm wondering if it is still possible for her to show this sign of being in heat even though she has been spayed.  No other signs of being in heat.  She has been eating, drinking normally.  No vomiting or diarrhea and no other signs of illness.  She wakes up several times each night and has difficulty calming down.

Giving a dog injections

My 4yo female Bichon Frise has just been diagnosed with allergies which caused chewing of her paws etc. My question is that I have to give her a shot every two days for 28 days. The first two days--the dog never flinched. The second two times, she yelped like I had hurt her. The dr. is out of town all week. To give a shot, I pull up the skin behind her head and located between her two shoulderblades. I have the needle at a horizontal angle and slide it in--then put the allergy medicine in. I do not give the shot up and down. Could it hurt because I'm giving the shot in the same area? Or any suggestions? Thanks.

Dog with blisters and lumps near vulva

My 4yo neutered female pitt bull terrier just developed bumps/blisters around her vulva.  They do not seem to hurt, but she is licking them.  Some are open and raw, some are closed but look like they will become open, others cannot be seen, but can be felt under the skin.  The vet has never seen anything like this.  She also seems to have a lump/swollen area on her left side (facing her), but the doctor did not think it felt like a hernia, or that we should immediately see what it is since it is new. What do you think it is?

Dog with episodic dizzy spells and urinary problems

Since he was 12 months of age, our 3 yo Labrador has had episodes of being dizzy and waivers.unsteady on feet. He has fallen down on a few occasions but now has learned (we think) to lean up against a wall or furniture for balance. Lower back, abdominal and hip muscles tighten and his back shows a pronounced arch. Right hind leg is held up off of the ground like there is either pain or an involuntary muscle contraction. Sometimes there is nausea and he vomits or attempts to vomit. The dog remains somewhat focused and responds to our calming talk by looking at us and wags his tail. Apparently he has little or no confusion. This is why we do not think these are petit mal seizures. These events last about 3 minutes. He was diagnosed with hypothyroidism about 18 months ago and has been on Synthyroid for that duration. The other disturbing thing we've noticed is his lengthy urination episodes. Dog remains perfectly still in the grass and urinates with good flow for 60+ seconds then his urine stream tapers to almost nothing but the dog remains in place. After another 60+ seconds his urine flow returns to normal and he continues for at least another minute. This is a regular pattern for every urination and lasts 3+ minutes. Housetraining was normal (3 - 9 months) and there have not been any urinary accidents or excessive periods of indoor confinement over the past two years.

Dog with liver adenoma

13yo Spaniel mix neutered male. Healthy, active dog who has had a rise in liver enzymes (sgpt &/or alt) to the 350 range.  Bilirubin normal.  Hepatic ultrasound shows two golf ball sized lesions, one quite close to the biliary system.  A liver biopsy came back as "adenoma" with no evidence of malignancy. The vet wants to have a surgeon remove one or both adenomas to avoid biliary obstruction, emergency surgery and then having to remove the gall bladder also.  Since the dog is acting perfectly fine and has only moderately elevated enzymes and no jaundice, is surgery the best course to follow or can one watch and wait and follow the liver chemistries, without getting suddenly into trouble which threatens the dog's life?

Vet question of the day

Add to Dog with hypothyroidism and back problems

Our 9 year old beagle had been in good health, but had been getting fat and lazy in her older years.  We took her to the vet for routine checkup and mentioned that she slept most of the day so the vet did some blood work and determined that her thyroid level was way low (0.1%).  The vet started her on a medication of thyroxine, 0.4mg a day.

At first the dog was much more alert and seemed to have much more energy than she had before.  She also lost a fair amount of weight very fast, from 37.5 pounds down to 31.5 pounds.  Then, on Saturday of Labor Day weekend, she got really sick....

all of the sudden she could hardly stand. She couldn't hold her bladder, her stomach seemed bloated and she was panting hard.  We took her to an emergency hospital and they basically said she had a stomach ache, that she was OK and sent us home.

She appeared to get better, and the next day we were out of town (the dog was with us) and she got a lot worse.  We found a new emergency vet and he took xrays and said that she had back problems, basically a compressed disk.  He gave us something for her pain, Rimadyl - 25mg.

We started off giving her one pill a day, and it seemed to help.  But a few days later she was bad again.  Our regular vet recommended increasing the dosage to twice a day, for both the Thyroxine and Rimadyl.

She has been on the twice a day rate for a little over a week now, and she has her good days and bad days. My concern is that overall she seems to be getting worse, and I don't understand how the symptoms match the diagnosis.

Even when she is feeling bad I can pet/scratch her back, including the area of this compressed disk and she doesn't indicate any signs of tenderness.  Her stomach, however, gets very tender.

I have noticed that she will usually get worse right after she eats, like within 1/2 an hour of eating. Before she eats, she is bouncing around a little begging for food, 1/2 hour later she is walking like a drunken sailor.

She has been sensitive to being picked up for a number of years, which we have attributed to arthritus.  She has always been the most sensitive to being picked up from under her rib cage.  Conversely, she loves a good vigourous back scratch.

So, my questions is: should I accept what the vets have told me, or should I continue to investigate?
