Dog giving birth - problemsOur Shih Tzu, Chee Chee started giving birth this morning sometime. We found one pup at about 7 a.m. A boy, healthy and nursing. It's now 1:47 p.m. and she hasn't given brith to another. I've called several vets and they are closed incuding our own. I'm trying to locate a hospital. She's not in stress. Not too long ago, she was panting and went back to the paper, leaving the pup. This isn't her first litter, she had 2 prior, the last of which was about 2 years ago. Is she okay. I'm still trying to contact the hospital.
Dog with muscle cramps and spasmsMy dog (9yo female neutered Lhasa Apso cross) has 3 episodes (that I know of) where her legs "freeze" and she is unable to walk for about 2-3 minutes. 2 times it was her hind legs, like she curled up and layed there until the episode was over. Tonight was the 3rd and it was in her front legs, they just appear to be in a muscle spasm of sorts. I plan on taking her in to have her examined but hoping you might have an idea so I can do some research. It doesn't appear that she is in pain, we rub her when it is happening to see - nothing. After the episode passes, she is fine again. Do you have any idea what could be causing these episodes? It is like she is paralyzed for those few moments. The first episode was probably a couple months ago, the 2nd was a couple weeks ago and the 3rd, tonight. I hope I have given you enough information, I am at a loss and very upset not knowing what this could be. Over all she seems very healthy. Not really showing her age.
Forgetting to give dog heartworm tabletI forgot to give my dog (5yo female German Shepherd) last month's dose of dirofilaria medication. If I give her a dose this month, is there still a possibility that she could come down with heart worms?? If she has heart worms,is there a way to test her to early on before the disease gets out of control?
Buying dog from interstateI am currently looking for a Chihuahua puppy to purchase online because there are none available in my immediate area of Minnesota. Many Breeders say the will ship the puppy via air through pet shipping services such as "delta pet first" etc...I have read briefly about the conditions the animal will be subjected to, which seem ok, the "pet cabin" is air pressure and Temperature regulated and they seem to be treated with care, and the airline and handlers have to comply with the animal welfare act. The breeders will not ship the puppy until it is 12 weeks of age,to make sure it is healthy and weaned from it's mother.I am stil a bit worried though. There are many breeders in Missouri which would be a short flight away. SO...my question for YOU is: What is your oppinion of putting animals such as dogs (which are so humanlike as opposed to other animals) through an air flight, especially such a SMALL and FRAGILE breed of dog and at such a young age? The breeder recommends visting the vet within 3 days after the flight to get the puppy checked, to make sure the flight did'nt affect it. Have you ever cared for dogs in a similar situation, ever seen any health problems because of flying? ANY information you have on this would be helpful to me as It is what is hindering me from buying a pup at this moment.
Breeding dogsI have had two Pom females since birth. The smallest is in heat and I want to breed her to my long haired Chichuahua. They are about the same size. They are flirting and playing but not mating yet. My other male who is in diapers so he cannot breed her is not acting interested. She is slightly swollen and spotting. 1. How do I know she is ready to mate? Situation two:
Dog with mass on spleen - post splenic removal problemsOur 9 year old spayed pit bull had her spleen removed, along with a 4 lb tumor, 6 weeks ago. Pre-surgery she had a transfusion her blood was at 18%, post surgery she was great and was allowed to go home a day early. The report on the tissue sent in was not conclusive, the large histiocytoid cells were poorly differentiated. So, we have been waiting on a second test (stain) there are no normal indications to suggest cancer, I.E. swollen lymph nodes, high calcium, or problems with marrow. At 5 weeks after surgery she started to slow down and seemed a little tired, we went to our vet, her blood count was 35%. then 1 week later (friday) her blood count was 22%, she was put on prednisone and imuron. The blood came up to 26% for 1 day (saturday) and is now (monday) at 21%. The marrow is still working hard. They do not think there is post surgery bleeding this long after the proceedure. Do you have any thoughts on post surgery bleeding? Can internal stitches leave a gap and allow seepage? there were no other tumors seen in the abdominal area. I have been searching for any info. on post splenectomy complications and have not found anything on dogs |
