Dog with mass on spleen - post splenic removal problems

Our 9 year old spayed pit bull had her spleen removed, along with a 4 lb tumor, 6 weeks ago. Pre-surgery she had a transfusion her blood was at 18%, post surgery she was great and was allowed to go home a day early. The report on the tissue sent in was not conclusive, the large histiocytoid cells were poorly differentiated. So, we have been waiting on a second test (stain) there are no normal indications to suggest cancer, I.E. swollen lymph nodes, high calcium, or problems with marrow.

At 5 weeks after surgery she started to slow down and seemed a little tired, we went to our vet, her blood count was 35%. then 1 week later (friday) her blood count was 22%, she was put on prednisone and imuron. The blood came up to 26% for 1 day (saturday) and is now (monday) at 21%. The marrow is still working hard. They do not think there is post surgery bleeding this long after the proceedure.

Do you have any thoughts on post surgery bleeding? Can internal stitches leave a gap and allow seepage? there were no other tumors seen in the abdominal area. I have been searching for any info. on post splenectomy complications and have not found anything on dogs

Nursing puppies - hand rearing puppies

I have a 3 1/2 week old male german shorthair alaskan husky mix.  The mother has stopped taking care of this pup.  I started feeding him goats milk 3 days ago.  It is half the size of the other pups.  He is urinating regularly.  Eating 1 or 2 ounces every 2 hours.  He is defacating regularly, the stool is pure white with a drop of blood in it.  It is firm in texture.  He is getting around on his own and whines for food.  He does seem dehydrated, his skin is not boucund back when lightly pinched.  I can not afford huge vet bills for a pup that may not survive.  On the other hand I do not want to loose him either.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Dog with mass on spleen

A week ago I rescued a stray poodle, that was quite debilitated. She had no tags on her and there were no reports of anyone missing a dog from the police. It turned out that the dog needed an operation after my vet noted on an ultrasound a mass. The mass was in the spleen and the spleen was removed. The mass was encapsulated. I am hoping so very much it isn't cancer. My vet won't say anything - one way or another. It was ruptured, as I believe splenic tumors can be. She said it did not look as bad as other tumors of the spleen that she had seen, and she said that it wasn't "that" big. Of  course, we are waiting for the pathology report. However, I'm going crazy hoping it is benign. Would you know the percentage of survival or what chance (percentage wise) we hve for it being benign? The dog is about 11 years old. She was very thin when we found her, but has a wonderful appetite. She sleeps a great deal, but we are hoping that that is because of the surgery and the hard life she has had to endure on the streets.

Dog urinating in sleep

Savannah (1yo black female neutered Labrador) has recently( over the last month) started urinating unknowingly.  Usually in her sleep.  She will wake up laying in urine and she doesn't even know she did it.  She has for a long time been eating from our Yellow labs bowl her Prescription ID food. However, has her own food Eukanuba.  They like to share. However, this does not seem like a UTI type of thing.  What could it be and is it treatable?  Thank you

Dog with diarrhea

My 16yo female neutered Chihuahua's poop is green and she is having loose stools. I am feeding her Beneful - chicken and she has eaten this before. Recently she spent a few days in a kennel. I hoped that the problem would disappear in a few days but it has not. What could be causing this? Should she go to the vet?

Pregnant dogs morning sickness

I am writing back again because we have been to several different vets and they all have a different opinion. I will tell you what has gone on since I wrote before.

First of all, just to recap, Our dog (1.5 yo female mini dachshund) went into heat on 9/21/03. On 10/2 through 10/5 she was mated with another mini-dachshund and they had several succesful ties.

Next, on 10/18 and 10/19 Maggie did not eat her Purina Dog Chow. We went on the 19th and bought some Pedigree Little Champions Morsels in Sauce. She ate all of it with no problems. We took her to the vet. on 10/20 who put her on Amoxicillin saying that if she was sick it would help her, and if she was not sick it would not hurt her if she was pregnant. On 10/21 she started eating her Dog Chow again. She then started vomiting on 10/22 through 10/24 she started vomiting after she ate. The vet said dogs do not get morning sickness and that I should stop her food and medication. I have read in several places online that said dogs can get morning sickness. After we stopped her food and medicine she was fine, but after we restarted her food like they said small very bland meals she vomited a few times but only in the morning and she was fine at night. We took her to a different vet on 10/27 who felt for puppies (I think she called it palpitating?) That vet said that she could feel a couple of suspicious spots on either side of her. She told me to start Maggie on Purina Puppy Chow just in case she was pregnant. My questions are:

Do dogs get morning sickness? and What does a suspicious spot mean? She is giving me a complimentarily examination on 11/3. If there were suspicious spots on 10/27, will they be definite spots on 11/3?

Vet question of the day

Add to Female cat with bloody discharge from vagina
Our (1yo female DSH) neutered cat (neutered prior to our ownership) has had intermittent small volume bloody discharge from her vagina for the last 3 months. On exam her vulva had an ulcerated area and our veternarian is planning an exam under anesthesia later this week. She has no weight loss, a healthy appetite, and has had no change in activity. She is the only animal in our home. What do you believe this could be? - Click here to read the answer
