Rage syndrome in dogs

Our bull terrier was at the local shelter and a friend from a local BT rescue association called us.  We could tell she had a sweet temperament, but was obvious she had been neglected and/or abused.  99.9% of the time she is the sweetest dog, lovable, playful,fun...but she has "sudden onset rage sydrome". Have you ever heard of it?  Mostly at night in her sleep, but she wakes up growling, snarling and biting. She snaps out of it pretty quickly and doesn't seem to realize what she has done. I've been bitten twice.  As of now she is scheduled to be put down on Monday.  It's breaking our hearts because we love her. She is currently taking xanax (Alprazolam) 2x a day .50 mg.  The last time she bit me, we had forgotten to give her the medicine that night. We had a BT for 12 years and she passed 21/2  years ago.  This is really hard to go through again.  Do you know anything about this?  I understand it is a genetic defect and not much can be done.  Thank you. This is a great service you have.

Dog biting and nipping hands

I rescued my dog (Mango)from a shed.  She was 8 weeks old when I got her.  She's a Pit Bull.  Other than her biting she is a very good puppy, very smart.  She already knows how to sit, lay, and sometimes stay and down.  We are still working with her.  I have one problem with her.  I can not get her to stop biting.  I know she is just playing and she not being mean, but we still need to get her to know it's not okay to bite people.  We have tried almost everything.  Some things work for about a day, but the next day she doesn't seem to care.  Here are some of the things we have tried:

Holding her mouth shut (I thin she thinks we are playing and nips when we let go)
Yelping loudly when she bite (She just looks at us for abbot a minute and carries on)
Holding her mouth open (She just keeps biting after we let go)
Putting our finger in her mouth so she can't bite us and it's annoying (This worked at first, but now it doesn't do anything)
Walking away (She just waits until we come back and continues)
Holding her (She just waits unitl we put her down)
Tapping her nose (This seems to make her want to play more and gets her more wound up)
Put vinegar on our hands (She licks it off)
Putting a toy in her mouth instead (She drops it and goes for a hand again)

Is there any thing else we can try?  If you can't help can you refer us to someone?

Dog mites

My vet says that my dog could have mites as he is losing patches of hair on his body and his face. Can you tell me what mites are commonly found on dogs?

Brown stains on fur of dog

My English bulldog has begun to develop reddish/brown stains around his mouth area, mostly under his chin.  In addition, there are reddish, brown stains underneath him as well, near the belly button area and the hind leg area. Also, I find that his discharge from the eye area are also light brown in color.   He takes vitamins (Canine red cell) every day....this is red in color.  Could this be causing the staining?  If not, do you have any idea what could be doing this? How can I get rid of it?  (the staining is mainly on the white portion of his fur)

Dog drinking drain cleaners

My dog ingested a small amount of diluted drain cleaner that had overflowed from the toilet.  He shows no signs of being ill, but I am just concerned and nervous.  What should I do?

Dog with hypothyroidism and back problems

Our 9 year old beagle had been in good health, but had been getting fat and lazy in her older years.  We took her to the vet for routine checkup and mentioned that she slept most of the day so the vet did some blood work and determined that her thyroid level was way low (0.1%).  The vet started her on a medication of thyroxine, 0.4mg a day.

At first the dog was much more alert and seemed to have much more energy than she had before.  She also lost a fair amount of weight very fast, from 37.5 pounds down to 31.5 pounds.  Then, on Saturday of Labor Day weekend, she got really sick....

all of the sudden she could hardly stand. She couldn't hold her bladder, her stomach seemed bloated and she was panting hard.  We took her to an emergency hospital and they basically said she had a stomach ache, that she was OK and sent us home.

She appeared to get better, and the next day we were out of town (the dog was with us) and she got a lot worse.  We found a new emergency vet and he took xrays and said that she had back problems, basically a compressed disk.  He gave us something for her pain, Rimadyl - 25mg.

We started off giving her one pill a day, and it seemed to help.  But a few days later she was bad again.  Our regular vet recommended increasing the dosage to twice a day, for both the Thyroxine and Rimadyl.

She has been on the twice a day rate for a little over a week now, and she has her good days and bad days. My concern is that overall she seems to be getting worse, and I don't understand how the symptoms match the diagnosis.

Even when she is feeling bad I can pet/scratch her back, including the area of this compressed disk and she doesn't indicate any signs of tenderness.  Her stomach, however, gets very tender.

I have noticed that she will usually get worse right after she eats, like within 1/2 an hour of eating. Before she eats, she is bouncing around a little begging for food, 1/2 hour later she is walking like a drunken sailor.

She has been sensitive to being picked up for a number of years, which we have attributed to arthritus.  She has always been the most sensitive to being picked up from under her rib cage.  Conversely, she loves a good vigourous back scratch.

So, my questions is: should I accept what the vets have told me, or should I continue to investigate?

Vet question of the day

Add to Dog limping after jumping on owner
About a week ago when I came home from work I let my dog (2yo female neutered German Shepherd) Sophie out of her kennel and she jumped up on me(as she always does)to greet me and her right foot was caught in my sweater for just a few seconds. Later on in the day I noticed she was favoring that foot or leg. She doesn't whine or yelp like she has pain, but she has been limping for a week now. What could she have done to her leg? A sprain maybe? I touch up and down from shoulder to foot and it doesn't seem to bother her. Please help me. She wants to play with my other German Shepherd and I don't know what to do or what is wrong. Thanks for your time. - Click here to read the answer
