Dog with lump on shoulder

I have a staffordshire bull terrier and she is 6 years old and all was well until after our walk one morning when I took off her walking harness and saw this huge lump on her back, just below her shoulder blades. It is the size of a golf ball and sticks out like a hump. It is soft and hard to the touch and moves around. What gets me, is that it popped up within half an hour. Before the walk there was nothing, then there it was. Can you give me an idea of what this could be? I am thinking of cancer, gland swelling, an abcess a bite or a bruise. Today is the third day and it is still there but not so round, it is a little harder and moves around more and a little more horizontal than rounder, if you know what I mean. She is in no pain, and eats and drinks well, and her urine and poo is normal. She plays and lays on her back to play with me, and lays on her back to sleep as well with the lump and so I know that it is not painful. Anyway, she hates going to the vet and if I can avoid it I will. The stress it puts on her nearly just about kills her. She stops at the door and goes the other way with all her might! I have to walk with her out of the vet's office until the vet is ready for her and then carry her in. Then she is just totally stressed out and when we get home she just lies there for ages calming down. Please, any advise is appreciated. If it is cancer I will not take her to the vet because they will start cutting, etc and she would be on her way to death anyway. It is too big for them to do surgery so, I don't know anymore.

Limping dog

On 10/17-03 we found Simon (the pug) very lame, cried when he walked and spent most of his time lying down. On 10/18/03, we took him to the vet and she said he had a possible spinal injury. She put him on a 30 tablet 5mg Rx of prednisone tappering down to every other day until gone. He responded well within 2 days of starting the predisone. On 11/14/03 we woke up to Simon in the same condition he was in on 10/18, unable to walk, wimpering, limping and spending most of his time lying down. We took him back to the vet on 11/14 and she suggested arthritus & put him on Rimadyl 25mg cut in half, twice daily... He does not seem to be improving. He is eating and drinking well. No xrays have been done. Blood work has been done to rule out heartworm & lyme. He will not walk more than a few feet without lying down and has to be carried up & down stairs, etc...he is only 5 years old, we have ased twice for an x-ray but since there is no obvious sign of "injury" the vet declined. Where do we go from here... Simon is in pain... could this be something internal i.e., cancer and what tests should be done ? Thank you.

Dog aspirin dosage

Our dog has a serious ear infection. It is the evening time and we can not take her to the vet until Thursday morning. Her ear is red, puffy and there is a smell, as well as discharge. My husband and I feel that she is in pain. Is it safe to give her a buffered asprin- such as Bayer?

Dog with blister on back

Boise has had a recurring water blister about the diameter of a dime and 1/2 inch high, on his back up by his neck for about a 10 months. My vet showed me how to pop it, which I have done about once a month. The last I popped it (with a sterilized needle) instead of a clear stream of water spraying out, watery blood came out. Do you know why the fluid would change? Is there anything I should do? He has never experienced any pain when I do this. He did have a 2nd water blister, but after popping it the first time, it never came back. He has no other blisters on his body. He does have one hard bump, about the size of a nickle that has not gotten any larger over the past 2 years.

Dog with osteoarthritis

I have a question pertaining to our 7 y.o. Male Springer. Over the last two weeks Buster D has been crying in pain related to movement. Up until now he has had no illness/injury and in fine condition. The pain is most noticeable upon attempting to get up from sleep or after resting. The pain seems to be located at the scapular and hip joints causing decreased ROM and sedentary behavior. I'm suspecting Osteoarthritis as the onset came with sudden change in weather. Here in Central California the fall season never truly came about. One day it's 95 degrees and now 50 degrees. The dampness and rain has also hit the area. Buster was taken to a local Emergency Vet on Sunday with condition worsening. As with children, once in the office signs and symptoms resolved. Physical exam showed neg findings however Rx Rimadyl with follow up asap to primary Vet. I'm told that radiographic studies would confirm the existence of bone spurs within the joints. Do you think this is the problem or could there be a virus, bacteria, or parasitic infestation that attacks the joints? Buster loves to ingest cat feces whenever possible and he may have possibly picked up something through that. If it is indeed Osteoarthritis, is prednisone along with OTC ANSAIDS a good treatment plan?

Add to Cat losing hair with itchy skin
About a month ago my female neutered Siamese mix cat lost all the shine in her coat of long hair, and refuses to come into the house, preferring to remain in the garage. She is shedding her hair and it comes out in big clumps. The skin on her back near her tail is flaking off, like large dandruff, and the hairs have tiny black things on them near the base. This area is very itchy and when it is touched, she goes into an involuntary biting spasm. She also has small scabs on her skin spread all over her body. - Click here to read the answer
