Puppy that diedPlease tell me if we killed our puppy. She became very sick after having her for 4 days. she began vomitting. The vet said to treat her with different things and I took her to him 2 days later. I finally heard she might have parvovirus the day before she died. The place I bought her from says all the puppies are fine, none of them are sick. My question since we have 2 older dogs can they have given her the virus? Can the older dogs be carriers and have passed it on to the puppy? I don't think they have ever had shots for parvovirus. Or could she have come in contact with it where we walked her and became ill that fast? I have never heard of this virus and shouldn't my vet have checked her for it right away when she became ill? One site said to start treatment within 2 hours and we waited 2 days. PLease help I do not understand all this and does this mean I can not get another puppy? The vet did not test so we don't know for sure that is what she died from, he said we could do a tissue sample after she died but I was too upset. thank you.
Dog with hygroma on headMy dog (10mo female neutered mixed breed) developed a bump on the top of her head approximately 2 1/2 weeks ago. The bump is located on the top of her occiptal bump. I took my dog to the vet for x-rays which revealed an area of soft tissue around the occipital scalp. There was no bone involvement. My vet told me the bump was most likely a seroma or hygroma caused by trauma to the area (in other words, my dog bumped her head). She gave me a course of Rimadyl (anti-inflammatory medication) for my dog and told me to "hotpack" the area and come back in two weeks. Two weeks later I returned to the vet. The dog's bump was a little smaller, but still evident (I was not very successful with the hotpacking). I was and am worried about the possibility that it may be a tumour. I asked the vet if we could draw some fluid from the lump to be sent for testing. The vet did that. The test came back clear (in other words, no abnormal cells in the fluid). However, my vet said the only way to rule out the possibility of a tumour is to do a biopsy of the tissue. Since the vet drew fluid off my dog's bump, it has got bigger. I am now really worried. My vet suggested we wait a month before we do surgery. I am having a hard time waiting, but neither do I want to subject my dog to surgery unless it's absolutely necessary. In herself my dog is doing fine and is eating and playing normally. Do you have any experience with the sort of lump I have described? Why do you think it is growing? Can my dog live with the lump? Do you think it could be a tumour? Do you have any other ideas? Thanks for letting me know.
Moving dog from kennel to houseMy father is ill with cancer and is 3 hrs away from home getting specialized treatment. My mother is there staying in temp housing with him. Right now, their dog is boarded at their vet. The Dr. says my father may be there from 4 wks - 6wks. I live in FL, my parents in NY. I have 2 dogs of my own and one does not get along well with other dogs. However, my parents have rented a house in my neighborhood for the winter (thru June). They never got to come down though b/c of my dad's treatments. I am wondering if I should drive my parents dog (12yo Lab mix male neutered) down here to live at the house. the house is nice and there is a nice fenced yard there. We would walk him in the am and the evening and my husband or I would try to sleep there every other night or so. It would be a big burden on my husband & I but if that is what would be best for the dog, I would do it. But here is the $64,000 question: what is in dog's best interest? He has been in the kennel a lot throughout the years and knows all the people there and they love him. (small town vet clinic) Here he would be in a strange place and alone a lot b/c we both work and have 2 dogs of our own to take care of. But he would be in a house and a yard and with us. But they say w/dogs it is all about routine. I want to do what is best for him. Is moving him to a strange place to spend time with us best? or staying at the kennel? I am so confused. Also, if I go up there to visit on the weekends (if we decide to keep him at the kennel) is it okay to "spring" him out for the weekend or is that too much of a roller coaster of emotions? (He is a 12 yr old dog and my parents traveled a lot so he would be in the kennel from time to time. Same workers are there and it is at the Vet). ANY insight would be greatly appreciated.
Dog sedativeWe are expats living on a remote Island in Indonesia and do not have a local Vet to consult. Our dog (6yo mixed breed female neutered) will no longer let us cut her nails and we would like to have our company Doctor give us a sedative to put her to sleep so we can do this. She weighs 25 kg and is very healthy. Could you tell us what could be used and how large a dose other than vallium as it only makes her hyper so our Doctor could give her a shot.
Pregnancy in dogsour dog (3yo female Chocolate Labrador) was with a breader for 5 days she was 9 to 10 days into heat when she arrived she stayed for 5 days she has been home for 7 days she is spotting slightly still just dripping around the house it is not real bright red kinda pink sometimes brownish. this is her first time with a breader and i did take her to the vet before i took her to the breeder he said she would brobably be ready in 2 to three days, but being that she was a virgin would she still bleed some even if she is pregnant? Is their a pregnancy test for dogs? and can you use the same kind that humans do and hold the stick under her whan she pees?
Dog self mutilating4 weeks ago our dog (2yo male neutered Jack Russell Terrier) had surgery to repair a luxated patella. The surgery went well but 2 days after surgery he chewed up his tail so badly that it had to be amputated. Following that he was placed on chlomipramine and fitted with a cone collar. He was doing really well for about a week so we removed the collar and about 2 days after that he chewed up his penis. His vet up the dosage of the chlomipramine and took an x-ray of his knee which showed that the pin used in surgery has migrated. They think that may be the cause of his self-mutilation if it's causing him discomfort and have advised us to have the pin removed 9 weeks following surgery. We have also taken him to a family member's house for 2 weeks of intensive training as our relative is a dog trainer. My concern is that none of the vets we've seen have heard of this kind of behaviour and therefore can't really help us with any advice. Is there anything we can do to make sure he won't continue to self-mutilate? We love having our Jack Russell and would hate to have to put him down if the self-mutilation doesn't stop. |

Dog digging carpet
My dog (5yo female neutered Blue Heeler mix) is outside during the day and inside at night. I've only had her for 6 months- I got her from a friend. During the past month, she started scratching at our carpets ruining them. She only scratches them around the walls never in middle of the floor. Why is she doing this and what can I do to get her to stop?
