dog not wanting to be left alone

our dog (8mo German ShepherdXWolf male neutered) is currently a mostly indoor dog, we take him for walks 2-3 times a day and he spends the rest of the time in the basement. WE've tried to put him in the backyard so he can play outside, but he will just sit at the back door crying unless one of us is outside with him (which, since we both work, would not work for every day). We buy him toys but he rips them up and all the beds we buy him he rips up or goes to the bathroom. Im scared hes so bored and unhappy in the basement, but we cant leave him with many toys because he will rip them up, we've tried 3 different beds (a pillow style, pet bed style and blanket style) but he rips those up. Im scared he doesnt get enough water either, as whenever we fill his dish, he will drink some, then flip the dish over (weve tried the "never move" dishes but he can pick those up too) and when he does it while we're at work theres no one to refill it. I want him outside but he refuses to play alone and we have 6 cats upstairs and they havent all had their shots yet and i dont want them to catch anything from him being outside. Is there anything we can do to have him be comfortable being outside, or being more comfortable in the basement? can we stop him from ripping up things, or are there any types of toys you can suggest leaving with him while we're at work and a way to stop him from spilling his water? and can him being upstairs give the cats anything? (the dog has had his shots, some of the cats have not) and is there anything we can do to calm him down? (he barks a lot if he knows someones close, he jumps on EVERYONE and he knocks everything over, repeatedly drops his dishes for the noise it makes). i know its a few questions, but its easier asking them all in one go than retyping the same thing over and over again for each one. Thank you very much, I greatly appreciate your input.

Dog with smelly breath

My girlfriend's dog (13yo Cocker Spaniel, male neutered) has VERY severe bad breath. We love him but his breathing is so unpleasant, that his panting will soil a room. They have had him for years, and apparently he developed this problem slowly through his old age. Now that I'm dogsitting, I was wondering what could be done. We were trying to give him milkbones, but his gums started to bleed from chewing them. We've only been giving him "softer" food and treats since, but his breath is as bad as ever. It smells like he eats rotten garbage or like his teeth are decaying...Anyways, any advice would help. Thank you.

Sudden death in dog

Let me explain my scenario: I am 19 years old and came home from work today to find my beagle (8yo female neutered), Kaylee, lying on my back porch, dead, with a very swollen stomach and a lot of blood that had come out of her nose and mouth. I am having a very hard time dealing with the loss as I loved her very much and she was much more than just a dog to me. She had no health problems except she was a little overweight because, well, she loved food. Now, I never allowed Kaylee to go out in the front yard because it wasn't fenced in. I took her on walks instead. The back yard however is fenced in with no plants except for grass in it. Kaylee and my other dog, Duke, have gone in the back yard since they've been living at my house and have never come back with any illnesses, let alone dying. My dad does give the dogs bones once in a while but they are never sharp chicken-type bones, just round and dull for them to chew on. I am deeply saddened by the loss and I just have to know what exactly killed my beloved dog. She meant too much to me to just allow her death to go without knowing what killed her. Please help, I don't have the money to ask my vet for an autopsy. I just want to know what the possible situations are that killed her. The night before she died (last night) I saw her around 1am before going to bed and she was completely fine and happy. Please help..like I said, she meant way too much to me to just allow her to go without knowing how she went. How could she have died..and..was she in pain? Thank you very much for reading..I look forward to your response.

Dog catching parvovirus from another dogs stool after vaccination

I have a 7 month old puppy (Staffy mix terrier, female neutered) that has survived parvo and is living with distemper. She has not recieved any shots due to the fact that the vet does not want to disturb the distemper. I have a 16 month old dog that needs his 1 year booster shots. Is there any way that if he receives his booster shots he may pass something to the 7 month old through his stool?

Dog exposed to parvovirus in showgrounds

I recently learned that over this past weekend there was Parvo on the show grounds that we were just at. The individual that had puppies there with Parvo was an exhibitor and walked all around our set-up, in the same rings etc. May have petted or let my dog(17mo male Borzoi) jump up on her. I had given my now 17 month old dog the first set of puppy shots up to 16 weeks, but have not given anything at 12 months. I was also at the show the previous weekend where we believe the exhibitor picked up Parvo and brought it home to her puppies. Currently there are no signs of Parvo from the very first weekend that was approximately 11 days ago. The most recent possible exposure was this past Sunday so that would be three days as of today. Some people have told me not to do the booster shot right now because if my dog were to come down with Parvo within the next week that they would get a worse case. So my question is: Should I immediately give the booster so that within 3-4 days the puppy could build up additional immunity before the incubation period is over? If so, what type? Modified live, live? If not, how long after this most recent exposure should I wait to give the booster.

dog with smelly behind

Luke (9yo male Lhasa Apso neutered) has developed a smell that seems to come from his behind. He is good health and doesn't seem to have any other problems. When ever I got my last dogs hair cut they always should they cleaned his glands. I never understood what that meant but I figured they did. Luke gets his hair cut at PetSmart and they never mention doing anything with his glands. Could this be the problem. The smell is pretty bad. Thanks

Vet question of the day

Add to Dog with fleas
Last night  my 7yo female neutered maltese was scatching a little & I noticed that the day before she did a little too.  I rolled her over to look through her and found a flea...then 2 more a little bit later.  I immediately ran to the store and bought Sergeants flea control that you put on their back between the shoulder blades & put that on her immediatedly.  I washed all of her bedding & have vaccumed the house at least 3 times since.  We have a huge 2 level house and the dog is 99.9% of the time on our main level in our living room & dining room.  I found only 2 today...and that was early this morning...I have not seen any since...but am scared to death of how many fleas are in our house that I cannot see.  I am afraid they are crawling everywhere & don't know where to start.  The dog sometimes goes upstairs in our bedrooms.....I am afraid these pests could be in closets & etc....any advice would be greatly appreciated! - Click here to read the answer
