dog with smelly behindLuke (9yo male Lhasa Apso neutered) has developed a smell that seems to come from his behind. He is good health and doesn't seem to have any other problems. When ever I got my last dogs hair cut they always should they cleaned his glands. I never understood what that meant but I figured they did. Luke gets his hair cut at PetSmart and they never mention doing anything with his glands. Could this be the problem. The smell is pretty bad. Thanks
dog on prolonged heatMy Saint Bernard (2yo female) Maggie has been in heat for 12 weeks now. This seems to me to be a very long time for her to be this way. She has to stay either confined indoors or outside when she is in heat and we would really like to have her back inside with us. What could be causing her to be in heat so long? Thanks!
dog with unexplained weight loss and loss of appetiteMy dog (11yo male neutered Labrador Retriever) recently developed something about four weeks that caused him to lose a lot of weight. He didn't eat much or drink much. My vet has done numerous blood work which all came back perfect and x-rays and barrium x-rays which did not reveal any masses or any other problems. I had suggested a scope and test him for worms before exploratory surgery in the abdomen. They put him on an antibiotic which eliminated a fever, Pepcid AC 2/day, and another prescription pill for coating the stomach 2/day. He eats in little spurts but doesn't have his energy. We bring him back in next week for another weight. He has lost about 10lbs since June of this year. He did have a fever but the antibiotics seem to make that go away. He was 102.4 and went as high as 104. He did have vomiting for a while and diarrea. He was placed on a pill to stop that. He hasn't vomited in over two weeks with the medicines. He does eat but very little. I have checked his mouth and he chews biscuits or treats just fine. i've tried mashed potatoes, ground beef, rice which he eats some and also the soft dog food from pedigree which he ate a bit. Any suggestions?
dog with blood in urineBear(4yo male neutered Lhasa Apso) was diagnosed with Oxalate Bladder stoned 1 1/2 years ago and underwent surgery and had them removed. He is on medication that I give him twice a day to prevent the stones from coming back. He is also on prescription sciende diet 1/2 UD and 1/2 WD. In October I noticed pink in his urine. Took him to the vet with a urine sample. PH was a bit high, but all tests including xray were fine. He was ok until a week ago, noticed pink again with more red sprinkler at end of urination. Took urine sample to vet, PH was perfect, found no blood cells in urine, vet says she could not see anything wrong with his urine. Was told to keep an eye on him. That could be snowflake like crystals that are irritating him. ! week later, still blood at end of urination. He is palyful, alert, eats fine, is not straining and is not having frequent urination. Should I be concerned and when should I take him to the vet again?
Itchy dog with possible demodex mite infestationI took my dog (2yo male neutered Rhodesian Ridgeback) to vet because he was very itchy. First they said allergic reaction. Second time,1 week later, did skin scrape & said Demodex parasite. Told to apply "Revolution" now, in 2 weeks, then in 4 more weeks. Question- all my research never mentions "Revolution" as treatment and says that I should be concerned with the underlying cause because he is an older dog. (not a puppy) The vet said that some older dogs can get infestation if immuno compromised. He had a bout of diarrhea in beginning on Jan supposedly due to stress of being in kennel. When I asked the vet how being sick in Jan can cause this in March/April I really didn't get an answer. Should I have him tested for a more serious illness? Should I be giving some sort of dip that was talked about on the internet? He has no fur loss and seems to be a little less itchy. Will this "Revolution" completely eradicate the parasite and should I be concerned in my dog has to go back to the kennel? Thank you for all your answers.
Dog ruptured anterior cruciate ligament on knee2 years ago Abby (9yo female neutered Jack Russell dog) had surgery on her right ACL. her knee is tight and holding well. 10 days ago, she ruptured her left hind ACL. We knew this was a high possibility. Because she is under 35pounds our vet says to wait to see if it stabalizes by itself. She now walks fine, with a slight limp but when standing is on tip toe, as she was with the other knee before surgery. After 10 days of leash walks and crating, should she be putting more weight on it by now? Our vet says that if the meniscus tore it will require surgery, (it was torn in the other knee) Will it do any good to wait any longer, or if she is still tip toeing after 10 days should I ask my vet to proceed with surgery? If surgery is the only fix then I would rather get on with it instead of having her in continued pain. At a recent teeth cleaning and blood test we discovered She had high liver enzymes 2 months ago, but they came back to normal after removing 2 absess teeth and daily doses of SAM-e. So as far as pain in concerned we are hesitant to give her any meds. We do not want the liver to react. Should We continue to wait on the knee to heal or go ahead and do surgery? thank you for your time. |

Female cat with bloody discharge from vagina
Our (1yo female DSH) neutered cat (neutered prior to our ownership) has had intermittent small volume bloody discharge from her vagina for the last 3 months. On exam her vulva had an ulcerated area and our veternarian is planning an exam under anesthesia later this week. She has no weight loss, a healthy appetite, and has had no change in activity. She is the only animal in our home. What do you believe this could be?
