Puppy with blood in stoolsAs stated, purchased dog (9week old now Chihuahua female puppy) 3/7/05 (6 days ago) from reputable pet store. Had dog checked by vet on 3/10 everything fine. Stool sample normal and negative for parasites. Next shots due 4/5/05 was up to date on shots on 3/10. I believe I am the fault of the problem my puppy has and am hoping it will rectify itself on its one. Puppy weighs 2lbs 8oz. I am used to Boxers never had a small dog. Was given Natures Choice Lamb and rice dry food by pet store. Told vet that dog did not appear to eat very much. He suggested I mix canned with dry. Friday I mixed canned and she ate a little better - and stool firm and normal. Yesterday, not content with amount she ate, I decided on my own to only give hr canned food for the entire day - Natures Choice Lamb, rice and has peas and carrots in with it along with broth. She did not sleep though the night last night so I placed her in bet in kitchen. This am there were many thin stools with drops of blood dotted on the training pads on the floor. She has had several loose stools today and squeezes brigh red blood drops out at the end of movement. Also some blood around the stool in spots but not "in" the stool. Also, some drops of blood on her blanket. Alarmed,I returned to the dry food and mixed a small amount of cooked ground round around the small bite pellets - she ate about 1/2 cup so far and has been drinking water and acting like a frisky normal pup. I have also cleaned her rectum and placed some vasoline on it as that is all I have right now but will purchase anything necessary for her. Do dogs get hemorriods? What can I do? Will this clear up on its own? Help! Eternally greatful. Right now I am embarassed to return to the vet and tell him what I have done, but if you think I should I will. Many Thanks!
Dog dying from volvulusMy dog (8yo Pembroke Corgi female neutered) died suddenly last week. I thought she had the flu and was watching her to see if I would need to take her to the vet the next day. When I woke up the next morning she was unresponsive and she died at the emergency vet's. My vet did an autopsy and said her intestine had twisted (volvulus? I think) and that her cecum had ruptured. He said it came on quickly and she was in septic shock by the time I got her to the vet. I want to know what could have possibly caused this to happen. It was not stomach bloat, but was in the intestine. She was a completely healthy active dog who had just passed a complete physical with blood work. I am sick with guilt over what I should and could have done. She had just vomited once and was lethargic; was not whimpering and did not appear to be in any pain, just under the weather. Can you help me understand why this could have happened? I am so devastated Thank you.
Dog with bad body odorMy dog has a bad odor I bathe him once a week he eats good quality food. After his baths he smells good for a couple of days and then he starts to get a bad odor. I've changed foods and shampoo. I bathed him yesterday. Last night I found the source of his odor its coming from the bottom of his paws underneath between his tows. I think when he scratches his head or body he wipes the odor on his coat and thats what causes him to smell. I looked at the bottom of his feet and their a reddish color and they smell really bad. The only idea i have is it might be his pea gravel where he goes to the bathroom.I pickup after him daily and hose down the gravel once a week.Any thoughts would be great thank you.
Dog leaving brown marks on carpetOur Lab Sophie (8yo female neutered) is leaving brown marks on the carpet. It has been going on for the past 2 months. Very light marks. It is not coming from her paws as I have checked very closely. It does smell a bit like feces. We have checked her for worms, gave her several baths, and had her anal glands looked at. The vet thought she did not not them expressed. As we have twin girls who arer ready to crawl I would really like to stop these stains! Your help is appreciated. Thanks.
Puppy coughingI bought a puppy from the humane society. It is a lab mix male that was neuterd last friday. The vet noticed the puppy had a cough so he gave him some antibiotics to take for a couple of days. The puppy has finished the antibiotics but still has a cough and now a runny nose. He coughs so hard I think he is trying to throw up but doesn't. Is this normal or should I take him back to the doctors? He seems to sleep alot more that he did when I first got him home. He is 2 and 1/2 months old.
Dog drinking lots of water and incontinent problemsWe have a yellow male lab who will be two in February. About six months ago we noticed that he would drink an unusual amount of water and urinate volumes. He is very active, loves to fetch and initially I chalked-up his large intake and output volumes to hot weather and activity. We then became aware that he would, at times, dribble urine and eventually had episodes of incontinence, both when awake and asleep. The first thing our vet did was test for a urine infection, which was negative. In spite of the test results, he thought it was worth treating him with a course of antibiotics to see if it made a difference. It didn't. We have had blood work done all of which came back within normal limits. (I can't remember exactly what tests but know it included blood sugar and think it included kidney function and thyroid. I would be happy to get that info if it would be helpful.) We have done several specific gravities, comparing samples from his last pee at night with the first one in the morning. There was little difference between them and the vet said his urine was like "distilled water". We had an ultrasound done to rule out any abnormalities. It was normal. We have tried a diet change from IAMS to Pedigree. (He is not given anything thing else to eat.) Approximately two or three weeks after the diet change and lasting for approximately four to six weeks, we noticed a significant decrease in intake and incontinence needless to say we were excited! I was supposed to take urine samples for a repeat of specific gravity, but for various reasons didn't get the samples to the vet. In the meantime his water intake and incontinence have increased dramatically, to the point where I would say it is worse than ever. We have limited his activity, especially in the afternoon and evening, but have not noticed a significant, if any, difference. Other than this he seems in good health - his coat is good, good weight. I am wondering lately, however, if he seems less energetic, but if he is, it's not pronounced enough that I could say with certainty. Our vet is puzzled and not sure where to go with this. He has mentioned various tests, but says that the results aren't always clear cut and definitive. We couldn't ask for a better dog and we love him to pieces, but the sad reality is that we can't afford to pursue every avenue and I thought it worth pursuing some other opinions to see if "fresh eyes" see something that we're missing. I appreciate your time and any suggestions you may have. |

Dog limping after jumping on owner
About a week ago when I came home from work I let my dog (2yo female neutered German Shepherd) Sophie out of her kennel and she jumped up on me(as she always does)to greet me and her right foot was caught in my sweater for just a few seconds. Later on in the day I noticed she was favoring that foot or leg. She doesn't whine or yelp like she has pain, but she has been limping for a week now. What could she have done to her leg? A sprain maybe? I touch up and down from shoulder to foot and it doesn't seem to bother her. Please help me. She wants to play with my other German Shepherd and I don't know what to do or what is wrong. Thanks for your time.
