Puppy sudden death
I must start from the beginning so you know all of the circumstances. I have 2 cats, 1 three, female and 1 male, about a year. I have one ferret probably 6 months old. I live with my 9 year old daughter and my boyfriend. I bought the Pug, "Pugsy" from a breeder a couple of days before christmas. The puppy wasn't quite 6 weeks old and was the last of the litter. I met the lady in a parking lot because she lived far away from me. I fell in love with the puppy instantly and of course bought it. I took the puppy to work with me every day and so she was constantly in my sight. One night I went to a seminar and left her at the house and the next morning I took her to the vet and her leg was broken... back leg. They thought that it would heal better on its own versus doing a sugical procedure on it. Anyway that seemed to be going fine. Last week I left my Pug at home with my boyfriend, 2 cats, ferret and my mom's pug who I have been pug sitting. When I got home from work the puppy's eye was blood shot and she was laying around a lot. I figured she was just traumatized or something. Friday there was no change in her condition not worse not better. I left for Orlando saturday morning leaving the puppy with the 3year old pug, 2 cats, ferret, and my boyfriend. My daughter went with me. My boyfriend called me at 4:00 in the morning on Sunday while I was in Orlando and told me that my puppy had died. I told him to bury it before I got home because I couldn't bear to see it dead. Do you think that the cats or ferret could have scratched in the eye and then it got sick from it? Do you have any idea what would have caused its death if not that? Do ferrets carry diseases like rats? My boyfriend was gone all day Sat. and late into the night. He checked the puppy (it was in it's cage) when he got home and that is when he found it. I am extremley upset over it's death as I had been wanting a baby pug for several years. I just want to understand why it died. |

Dog with problems walking
When I came home from work yesterday, Sparrow(6yo female neutered mix breed), who stays in my basement with access to the crawl space under the house, was having trouble going up the stairs. She seemed sick - hot nose & depressed. She has a knot midway up her tail about the size of a quarter. Her hindquarters are slightly swollen and tender. Her behind was dirty with dust, some fecal matter, and little black dots that looked like flea eggs (she doesn't have fleas - she's on med from the vet.) It seemed she had been dragging her bottom on the ground. My gut feeling is that she may have been bitten by a spider or god forbid a snake (in my basement?!!) but I'm also worried that she's hurt her back. She can still walk - even jump on the bed - but she is not moving correctly. She is still eating and drinking. She's not any worse this morning, but no better. She's not limping, but she acts stiff - is not moving her hind legs with ease, but I don't see where they look out of whack. For example, when she goes up steps, she just goes one step at a time, very slowly and carefully when she usually bounds & skips steps. It doesn't look like she's knuckling over, and her feet and legs look normal. Another thought after babying her this morning - she has had trouble in the past with her anal glands being blocked. Usually I try to massage & expel them when I bathe her. I haven't noticed her dragging her butt, which usually happens when her glands are filled and need expelling, but is it possible this could be the problem? Or constipation?
