Buying internet puppies

What next? Just when you think it can't get any worse, I've read that the number of complaints concerning online pet sales from the American Kennel Club, Internet Crime Complaint Center has jumped to nearly 700.
I would never recommend buying a puppy online just based on photos that the purported puppy breeder has posted online or emailed to you. Getting a dog is for life (and that could mean up to 20 years for some breeds) and it's not a decision that you should get into lightly or buy sight unseen. Read about what makes a good dog breeder. Due to the fact that a lot of these scammers are from overseas, there's no real way for victims of their ploy to get compensation or take up any legal action. And we're not talking a small amount here, some have reported to losing $2000 in these scams.
In summary there are 3 types of internet puppy scams :
1. The Nigerian pet scam
Anything with Nigeria in it in the internet world has a bad connotation to it. So many scams are generated from so called 'Nigerian' sources that it's something that should start alarm bells ringing just with the word. Fraudsters put up ads for purebred puppies at a discounted price - these puppies are usually ones that would fetch quite a bit in the normal dog market eg breeds like English bulldogs, teacup Chihuahuas. There's usually some sad story attached to the puppies which explains why they are being sold at a discount eg puppies were rescued from a storm ravaged area and just need good homes. The fraudster will then ask you to pay a deposit which would cover the shipment of the puppy, vaccinations, etc - money is usually asked 
to be wired across. Some will even come back to ask you for more and more money as they 'make up' the costs that would ensure you get the puppy. Unfortunately in most of these cases, no puppy ever arrives.
2. The overpayment scam
This is a scam that targets legitimate breeders or people selling puppies over the internet. For example, if you have puppies for sale over the internet, the fraudster will then contact you and make the necessary negotiations to settle on a price. Then what happens is that this person will then send you a cashier's check for payment for the puppy. However, when you receive the check, you will notice that it's a sum larger than the original agreed price so as a good Samaritan you contact the purchaser to let them know and they will then request for you to return the overpayment (via a wire transfer) so that they can send you the correct amount. You will then later find out that the original check overpayment was fraudulent and if by chance you sent the puppy out to them in good faith, that's the last you'll ever see of the poor thing.
3. Buying a puppy that is sick or dying or a puppy that is not initially agreed upon
Fraudsters have taken the demand for designer breeds eg Cockapoo, Labradoodles and turned it into a scam. How it usually works is that you see an online ad for a puppy of a breed that you want and you contact the fraudster about it, negotiate the price etc. It's common for fraudsters to send you pictures of the puppy you bought via email or snail mail. After you've paid for the puppy, you receive shipment of a puppy but that's 
when the penny drops - the puppy is usually either sickly or bears no resemblance to the pictures sent. And being the kind-hearted soul that you are, you aren't going to send it back, it's probably had a hard enough life as it is. Some of these puppies are from puppy mills which are factory like places that churn out puppies and keep breeding dogs and their puppies in crowded filthy conditions.
Note that just because they say that the puppies are AKC-registered doesn't mean that they are. If this is their claim, then check with the AKC and do some research on the seller. Check the Better Business Bureau and Internet Crime Complaint Center for any previous complaints. Stay safe.

My 2yo Great Dane bitch is having puppies now. How long can the bitch go between having puppies? She had one at 10:00pm last night and then two more this morning at about 6:00am. She hasn't had any problems but she hasn't had any more for about 10 hours. She doesn't seem to be stressed or in any pain, she is just nursing. How long should I wait before taking her to the vet?

My sister-in-law has a 3yo female pug that had puppies about two weeks ago and now she says that the mother has a swelling tit. She said it is about the size of a tennis ball and it is obviously very tender. She still lets the puppies eat, just not on that tit. She also said that she feels like she is starting to run a slight fever. I checked out milk fever but that seems too serious for the symptoms she is having...or is it. What could her condition be and is it serious and/or curable without a trip to the vet?

I am currently looking for a Chihuahua puppy to purchase online because there are none available in my immediate area of Minnesota. Many Breeders say the will ship the puppy via air through pet shipping services such as "delta pet first" etc...I have read briefly about the conditions the animal will be subjected to, which seem ok, the "pet cabin" is air pressure and Temperature regulated and they seem to be treated with care, and the airline and handlers have to comply with the animal welfare act. The breeders will not ship the puppy until it is 12 weeks of age,to make sure it is healthy and weaned from it's mother.I am stil a bit worried though. There are many breeders in Missouri which would be a short flight away. SO...my question for YOU is: What is your oppinion of putting animals such as dogs (which are so humanlike as opposed to other animals) through an air flight, especially such a SMALL and FRAGILE breed of dog and at such a young age? The breeder recommends visting the vet within 3 days after the flight to get the puppy checked, to make sure the flight did'nt affect it. Have you ever cared for dogs in a similar situation, ever seen any health problems because of flying? ANY information you have on this would be helpful to me as It is what is hindering me from buying a pup at this moment.

Maggie (1.5yo female dachshund) went into heat on September 22, 03 She bleed for 1 week that we noticed. My mothers mini-dachshund came over from October 2 - October 5 and they were in a tie several times throughout the weekend. We checked Maggie for any signs of bleeding but she had none. We know that she was in heat as she was swollen down there and bleeding and she let Travis tie with her. We are wondering if with no signs of blood, and being in a tie can she be pregnant. She is sleepy a lot and she wants to be held and loved a lot too. Both of those things are new to her. She had puppies when she was 8 months old and after nursing her nipples got smaller but were still bigger then normal so we can not tell if they are getting bigger or not. She went to the vet on October 20 but she could not feel any puppies. She said it may just be to early tho. So I guess what I am asking is this: If Maggie was not bleeing (that we could see NO red blood this week) Could have Travis gotten her pregnant? If the vet didn't feel anything at 18 days a long, could there still be puppies and just not big enough to be felt?

My new puppies are losing their hair. I have mainly noticed it on the puppies tails, but have seen it on the tops of their feet, sides of legs. It is on the middle of 2 of the puppies tails. The place is basically bald and on one of the dogs, a small growth similar to a wart is present (one of the dogs with it on their tail) About 3 dogs have it on their tail and 2-3 more have it somewhere on their legs or feet. One puppy just has a bald tip of his tail. I have taken digital photos that I can email when I'm done with this. The mom is a 3 yr old lab and I have never had any trouble with her, except when she was halfway through her pregnancy, I noticed a small round sore on her front leg about 6 inches above her foot. It was circular and she kept licking it and it is finally healing now after 2 months. The hair is finally growing back. It was about the size of a quarter. I have a 4 year old male (the dad) and he has never had any problems. Also, we bought a female lab this summer, she is 6 months now. I have seen her losing her hair on her forehead about the size of a baseball. It is not quite bald, just thin hair. As far as her medical history, when we first got her, she got real sick. I took her to the vet and she told me that my dog had Parvo and had to be put on Iv's. She almost died, but pulled through. Maybe if she had parvo, she also carried something else to infect the dad and mom and the resulting litter? I was wondering if this is ringworm or what else it is? If it is ringworm, I've read that you can treat this lamisil, is this the fastest way to treat this.

Cat moving house and not adjusting well
My cat and I moved into a new home. He now has three canine friends who he has spent time with before. One of the dogs was eating the felines stool, so I purchased the Purrforma self cleaning litter box. He would only urinate in it and chose to defecate on my side of the bed after 6 days. He attempted to defecate another time, I got him and placed him in the litter box, however that only worked once, and choose the bed again. Since then I purchased a new non automated litter box and returned him to his feline pine cat litter - that was two days ago and he has not eliminated anything sine. I have been leaving the bedroom door closed so he is not tempted. I'm just waiting for him to use it. any thoughts?
Should I lock him in a confined area until he uses it?
I need some advise or he might end up getting kicked out, and he is a special need cat as he has three fused lumbar (congenital defect.)
He is also doing an excessive amount of licking to the point where he has two balding patches. He just had an allergy shot 4 weeks ago. Should I inquire about behavioral modification type drugs?
