Fish – tanks sales, salt water and tropical
When I was going through vet school, many of my friends thought I was
peculiar in my fascination for fish and marine life. Most of them preferred
animals which were warm and cuddly and as the ‘how much is that doggy in
the window’ song goes, ‘you can’t take a gold fish for a walk’. I would agree
with them on that front. It’s hard to think of fish as cute and cuddly, they
aren’t warm for one thing, quite the opposite, most fish are cold and
clammy. But – I find it terribly soothing to sit in front of fish tanks and
watch fish – salt water or tropical. There’s something very ‘zen’ and almost
meditative about watching them, their startling array of colors, their varied
shapes, sizes and functions.

Speaking with fish owners, many would tell me that there was something very challenging in maintaining a mini ecosystem in their houses…none more pronounced than with pond fanatics who have beloved koi and gold fish swimming in their backyard ponds. As with any ecosystem or in a fish tanks’ case, a closed system, there isn’t any room for error, a lapse in maintenance chores would result in filthy water which would harbour dangerous levels of nitrates and bacteria blooms.
My advice to families thinking of getting their children their first pet is to start small – get a fish tank setup complete with filter, gravel and add some pretty fish of their liking and let them do the cleaning, feeding (with your supervision of course – I’ve had over-enthusiastic children feed their gold fish to death). More often than not, unless the hobby is yours as well, an overly large fish tank setup may end up in the garage as the interest wanes and other hobbies take hold. Having said that, bigger fish tanks look better and you can stock more fish and have more varied decorative effects. I’ve seen magnificent salt water fish tanks at stores and one at a friend’s place and it was a thing of beauty – the colors were breath-taking, and my all time favourite seahorses were just spellbindingly beautiful…a tribute to the hard work and diligence of the owners!
If I have inspired you at all to start your very own aquarium, then I would’ve succeeded in passing a bit of my awe at the diversity of God’s creatures on and I would consider it a major achievement. If there is enough interest shown I may even add a section about aquarium fish diseases at the site later on - and I have - check it out - Fish diseases - gold fish disease

Dog digging carpet
My dog (5yo female neutered Blue Heeler mix) is outside during the day and inside at night. I've only had her for 6 months- I got her from a friend. During the past month, she started scratching at our carpets ruining them. She only scratches them around the walls never in middle of the floor. Why is she doing this and what can I do to get her to stop?
