Cat drooling excessively

I adopted a male Maine Coon cat about 2 or 3 years old. The cat has a problem with excessive drooling. I checked his problem on the internet and the reason given was either a mouth or respiratory condition. I called the adoption shelter and explained my concern. I was told the cat had been adopted and returned because he was TOO AFFECTIONATE. They asked me to bring him in to be checked by their doctor which I did immediately. The doctor said he was healthy and could not find any problems.
The drooling is so bad that we cannot hold or love him the way he should be loved.
I am afraid that if he is returned again he will be adopted again and returned again and that would be very traumatic for the cat. Please give me your honest opinion as what to do.
Thank you.
